A bedtime that works (with a sitter, too)

Children sleep best when bedtime is the same with everyone. How to write it down so your sitter does it your way.

A child’s bed at night lit by a star-shaped night light, an open picture book on the patchwork duvet and a teddy on the pillow

The first evening with a new sitter is when bedtime most often goes wrong. Not because anyone does anything badly, but because it is different.

Three steps, always the same

Pick three steps and keep them in the same order: bath, teeth, story, for example. Write them on the note. Our sitters follow them exactly, including the funny bits (the song about the toothbrush, the goodnight to the moon).

Say what “lights out” means

The door open or closed? The night light on? The landing light? How many times can they come down? It sounds small, but it is what children check first.

And what happens if they wake

Tell us what you do: a cuddle and back to bed, a glass of water, a call to you. We will do the same, and write down what happened on the note for the morning.
